The Phone Call!

It was a usual sunday. About 9 in the night when he and his set of friends were playing some card game in their bachelor room, just like any other such weekend. That is when the phone rang and the guys suddenly became all silent. He stared at the phone for a while, partially restless. He saw this coming and he knew it was inevitable. He might have skipped the call to postpone what was about to come but he knew he can’t dodge it for longer.
So he attended the call and made a quick sprint to the balcony of the house.
It was her. It has been a month since he last met her and already been a week since he last spoke to her on phone. Two missed calls which he never returned back on top of it. Enough reason for all the panic in his eyes. He knew he was going to get blasted. But he gained all the courage to whisper in an innocent voice "Hello".
She was apparently angry on him. But keeping all the outrage aside, she started with a “Hello. How are you?” like any other time. He predicted what was to follow and initiated the Gandhian way himself, “I am fine. Sorry, I was busy with something for the past one week…”, right when she started with the core motto of the call, “What is more important to you than talking to me? Don’t give me silly excuses”. “Nothing like that. I was just about to call you, thought I could do that after your dinner time” he replied politely again with an apologetic tone. “Shut up. Talk to me after you are done with all that is keeping you busy!” she banged the phone.
Again, he stared at the phone for sometime. He didn’t choose to call back for he knew it would take sometime for her to cool down. He was partially relieved of the call. Maybe because he got less than what he actually expected. Or maybe that this was the nth time this was happening and he was so much used to it. For whatever it is, he knew her anger wasn’t going to last too long. After all, she can’t let him go off that easily like few other people from his past or even from the future, nor is she going to love him any lesser for such silly quarrels.
But this is exactly his upper edge, and he utilizes it very well like any other clever man. Looking back, he was never too busy to make her a call for the past one week, or for that matter, any day. But being all long distant, constantly thinking about her and making frequent phone calls is not really his type or in fact most guys’ type. This time he crossed the limit and is exactly paying for that. But he wouldn’t care and worry himself much, for he is yet another typical guy who knew all the tricks and techniques to console her and make her feel better.
He entered the house with an awkward smile which said it all for his friends who were still playing inside. After all, they all have been in this situation one day or the other. A hearty laughter followed in the gang, right when his phone rang again. There was pin drop silence all of a sudden yet again, and he was twice as panicked as he was before. This time it wasn’t his mom! Cheers, Nvn :)
